Georgia set to host future champions at Women’s 17 EHF Championship

Lithuania and Bulgaria will be hoping to improve on their 2017 performances in the Women’s 17 EHF Championship at the Georgian edition of this year’s event.

Lithuania won silver at their home tournament two years ago, while Bulgaria were bronze medallists in North Macedonia after beating the hosts in their final match.

The 10 teams playing for the title in Georgia are also competing for a ticket to the W17 EHF EURO 2021, the W19 EHF EURO 2021, and the Women’s Under-18 World Championship 2020, with the winning team set to qualify at all three competitions.

The Georgian tournament takes place alongside a parallel edition of the W17 championship in Italy.

Hosts start against Lithuania

Lithuania will get their 2019 campaign underway with a match against the hosts on Saturday, while Bulgaria play the Faroe Islands on Sunday.

Competition alongside Bulgaria and the Faroe Islands in Group A are Serbia, Ukraine and Greece. In Group B, Finland, Switzerland and Latvia make up the five teams competing.

Switzerland finished fifth at the 2017 tournament in North Macedonia, ahead of seventh-placed the Faroe Islands.

Finland were fourth at the Lithuanian edition of the W17 Championship in 2017, where Ukraine were sixth, Georgia ninth and Latvia tenth.

The W17 Championship in Georgia throws off on Saturday at 12:00hrs local time as Serbia play the Faroe Islands.

All the action can be watched live on ehfTV.com and followed on the official website, where the playing schedules can also be found. The tournament runs from Saturday 3 August until finals day on Sunday 11 August.
