Group A consists of the 2012 and 2015 winners Buducnost, French champions Metz Handball, Norwegian runners-up and 2011 trophy holders Larvik and the competition's only newcomers Odense HC.
The Russian participants of the last FINAL4 in Budapest, who will be steered by former Györ's title winning coach Ambros Martin in the new season, will play in Group B together with the Danish champions Kobenhavn Handball, Sweden's IK Sävehof and the French runners-up Brest Bretagne Handball.
In Group D the 2016 winners CSM Bucuresti were pitted against the brand new Norwegian champions Vipers Kristiansand, FTC-Rail Cargo Hungaria and the team, who qualifies from Group 1.
The first round is scheduled for 5-7 October and will be preceded by two qualification tournaments (7-9 September) whose winners will reach the fourteen teams in the group matches.
