Rematch of 2016 Olympic final marks start of Women’s EHF EURO 2018

The Women’s EHF EURO 2018 in France from 29 November to 16 December could not have asked for a bigger start. The tournament’s opening match on 29 November (21:00 hrs) in Nancy will see hosts and world champions France taking on 2016 Olympic champions Russia.

It is the rematch of the 2016 Rio Games final in which Russia edged France 22:19.

This classic encounter, prone to set the tone for the championship, was only one of several highlight matches that can be expected after the final tournament draw took place on 12 June in Paris.

In group A, Sweden face Denmark – a match of two Scandinavian arch rivals; the two teams met less than a year ago at the Women’s World Championship 2017 Quarter-final, with Sweden winning 26:23.

Montenegro have also been drawn to France’s group B and are sure to pose some major opposition to the hosts, just like they did in the World Championship 2017 Quarter-final which France won 25:22.

Group D, which is played in Brest, is headlined by EHF EURO record winners Norway and Romania. Both teams already met in preliminary round of EHF EURO 2016 and one year earlier in the semi-final of the World Championship which Norway only won after extra time, 35:33.
