Göppingen face Chambéry on road to EHF Cup Finals

If Frisch Auf Göppingen want to give themselves a chance to win the EHF Cup for a third straight year, they first will have to get past Chambéry Savoie Mont Blanc Handball in the quarter-finals later this month.

That is the outcome of the Men's EHF Cup Quarter-final draw, which took place in Vienna on Tuesday.

Göppingen have underlined their ambition to lift the trophy once again by becomg the only team to win all six matches in the group phase. Chambéry made it all the way to the EHF Cup Finals in Nantes two years ago where the French side ended up in fourth place.

Also, the other German contenders in the quarter-finals, last season’s runners-up Füchse Berlin, have been drawn against RK Nexe from Croatia.

Berlin won the trophy two years ago and are looking for their fourth EHF Cup Finals berth, while Nexe - which made a fresh start this season with nine new players - have not been in the quarter-finals before.

In a third quarter-final pairing, Fraikin BM. Granollers from Spain and Saint-Raphael Var Handball from France will battle it out for a place among the last four teams in the competition.

Granollers won the title twice in a previous competition format in the 1990s and finished third two years ago, while St.-Raphael are aiming for their second straight appearance at the EHF Cup Finals after finishing third last season.

There is no fourth quarter-final tie scheduled as hosts SC Magdeburg have qualified directly for the 19-20 May Ottostadt Magdeburg EHF Cup Finals as one of the group winners in the group phase, which ended last weekend.

The first leg of the quarter-finals will be played on 21-22 April, followed by the second leg on 28-29 April. The second-ranked teams from the group phase will play at home first, the group winners have the home right in the return match.
