Handball in the spotlight at European Youth Olympic Festival 2017

With the Men’s 17 European Open already being played and the Women’s 19 EHF EURO in the starting blocks for Thursday next week, this summer of younger age category events features another highlight as the handball competition at the European Olympic Youth Festival starts on Monday.

Over five days, the finals are played on Saturday 29 June, eight under 17 teams in the men’s as well as in the women’s competition compete for some very first Olympic silverware.

The EYOF 2017 take place in the Hungarian city of Györ. The handball matches will take place in the in Audi Arena, home of Women’s EHF Champions League winners Györi Audi ETO KC.

The idea of the European Youth Olympic Festival was brought to life in 1990 by Jacques Rogge, former president of the International Olympic Committees, with the aim to provide a possibility for young athletes to get to know the Olympic Movement and learn about the Olympic values and ideals.

The groups for the men’s and women’s event look as follows

The first two teams of each group qualify for the semi-finals on Friday, 28 June. Two years ago, at the EYOF in Tbilisi, France won the men’s competition while Russia topped the podium in the women’s event.
