NEWS REPORT: Spain regains a second place for its teams in the VELUX EHF Champions League, while Hungary overtakes Denmark in the women’s ranking
EHF releases distribution of European Cup places for 2018/19
The European Handball Federation has published the ranking that determines the distribution of places in the EHF’s European Cup competitions, namely the EHF Champions League, the EHF Cup and the Challenge Cup, in the 2018/19 season.
On the men’s side, Germany still top the ranking and have two teams guaranteed in the VELUX EHF Champions League.
However, just below Germany, Spain, now second, and Hungary, now third, have swapped places.
The change is significant as it guarantees Spain a second team in the VELUX EHF Champions League, while Hungary has only one team guaranteed in Europe’s top competition in the 2018/19 season.
Further down, Israel climbed six places to 25th and gained a place in the VELUX EHF Champions League Champions League.
Hungary tops Denmark in women’s ranking
In the women’s ranking, Hungary has overtaken Denmark for the first time in years. However, with both teams still being ranked first and second respectively – just in reverse order compared to the 2017/18 season ranking – both nations have still two places in the Women’s EHF Champions League.
Italy made an important step forward. The nation climbed from 25th to 23rd place and is now among the nations that have a place guaranteed in the Women’s EHF Champions League.
The ranking for the 2018/19 season is based on the results of the European Cup seasons 2014/15, 2015/16 and 2016/17.
