Veszprém record first away win in Silkeborg
Veszprém got their first away victory of the season as they defeated Bjerringbro-Silkeborg in VELUX EHF Champions League Group A on Sunday. While the visitors controlled the game for most of the time, the Danish hosts threatened to come back in the second half but goalkeeper Roland Mikler once again proved his class.
GROUP A:
Bjerringbro-Silkeborg (DEN) vs Telekom Veszprém (HUN) 24:29 (9:15)
In the wake of their second consecutive defeat and third in five games, veszprém were desperate to end their run of bad results.
But Silkeborg, who lost their previous two home games against Barcelona and PSG, knew that there would be no better time to catch Veszprém.
Veszprém took control of the game after the first 10 minutes and built a comfortable lead. Roland Mikler was once again magnificent in the visitors’ goal and Momir Ilic was too much for the Danish defence to handle.
Sebastian Frandsen made some stunning saves for Silkeborg in the second half and the home side slowly started to get closer and closer to Veszprém.
The visitors might have thought they already won the game but suddenly found themselves up by only one goal.
Scoring fast-break goals
Nikolaj Magnussen and Sebastian Skube found the way to the Hungarian net but Mikler again stood up to prevent his team from conceding an equaliser.
Veszprém capitalised on his saves by scoring fast-break goals, and Dragan Gajic could even allow to miss a last-second penalty as the visitors had already secured a comfortable margin.
Veszprém had to wait until the ninth round of the VELUX EHF Champions League to record their first away victory of the season. They jump into third place while Bjerringbro-Silkeborg remain in seventh.
Post-match statements
Peter Bredsdorff-Larsen, Bjerringbro-Silkeborg coach: "It was of course a well-deserved win for Veszprém. If we want to get a point out of this game, we should play over our limits. Veszprém showed more quality in the decisive moments. We showed again that we deserve to be in Group A."
Kristian Klitgaard, Bjerringbro-Silkeborg left wing: "We have done very great in the first nine matches in the VELUX EHF Champions League. We have won two very important games against Wisla Plock and Kadetten Schaffhausen and we will keep fighting for a spot in the Last 16."
Xavier Sabate, Veszprém coach: "We had a lot of respect for them but I think we played a great first half where we got some easy goals on our fast breaks. In the second half, they came back to one goal but the reaction from our team was good."
Gasper Marguc, Veszprém right wing: "No teams win easy here so we prepared ourselves for a tough match and we executed the tactics from the coach well. When they came back in the second half, we regrouped and turned the match into our favour."
