Defending champions reach EHF Champions Cup Quarter-finals

Russian side “Ekaterinodar” Krasnodar and Multichem Szentendrei from Hungary, the 2015 men's and women's winners at the EHF Beach Handball Champions Cup, have reached the quarter-final of the event's 2016 edition.

On Friday, Multichem Szentendrei recorded their third and fourth win and comfortably top Group A, being the only team still to lose a game and even a set.

“Ekaterinodar”, who won not only the 2015 event but also the EHF Beach Handball Champions Cup, did lose a game on Friday (2:1 against Club BM Playa Ciudad de Malaga), but with three wins from four matches their quarter-final participation is secured.

However, with one match left to play in the preliminary round on Saturday, nothing is decided yet regarding the final group ranking. The first four teams of each group reach the quarter-finals.

“I think we have good chances even though other teams are potentially stronger than us. I'm very enthusiastic about this Champions Cup,” said Joachim Hansen from Danish side HEI Skaering. The Danes are currently placed third in Group A with two wins from four games, but have to play their last game against “Ekaterinodar.”

The only teams without any further chance to reach the knockout round are Italian side Pallamano Grosseto in the men's event as well as Cannabis Energy Drink – Kanonierky from Slovakia and Brüder Ismaning from Germany in the women's event. All three are still to win a game.

The final preliminary round matches are played on Saturday morning, the quarter-finals are played from 14:15 hrs onwards local time.
