Marta Mangué close to score 1,000th career goal in EHF EURO qualifiers

On paper the Spanish mission to qualify for the Women’s EHF EURO 2016 does not look too difficult.

On 1 June they play away against Austria, on 4 June they play at home against Bulgaria, and they have won both respective first legs comfortably. With six points after four rounds have been played in Group 3, Spain need just one more point to secure their ticket to the final tournament in Sweden, however if they want to take the top spot, they have to hope that the Netherlands drop at least a point in their final two qualifiers.

Either way, it does not mean that Spain take these upcoming challenges lightly – in particular this holds true for right back Marta Mangué who can reach the personal milestone of 1,000 international goals. She only needs to score another nine.

"I hope to reach the 1,000 goals in these two matches. It would be nice to do it in Rio at the Olympics, but I do not want to miss the opportunity now. It is a very nice number!  I prefer to reach 1,000 goals now because I don’t know what happens in the future.”

The right decision

Mangué has joined the Spanish camp in high spirit as she had just won the French cup with her team Brest – a historic occasion as it was the first time that a French team from the second division won the trophy. Mangué was furthermore the team’s top scorer.

“Winning the French Cup was amazing! We beat the top teams in the competition and I am very proud of my team,” she said.

Mangué joined Brest at the beginning of the 2015 season, coming from first division team Fleury Loiret Handball – a move that not everyone understood straight away.

“Everyone asks me why I went to Brest, but the results have answered all questions. Brest have a very good project, with a lot of ambition and we have proven ourselves this season. We have not lost a game in the league and in the cup, and the potential of this club is very high.”

EHF EURO and Olympics in mind

Mangué says that the two upcoming qualifiers are not only important because they are the last obstacle on the way to the EHF EURO, but also because they are one of the last times the team is together before it travels to the Olympics in Rio.

“An Olympic year is very intense I hope that all goes well and I’ll be at my best because these might be my last Olympic Games. It would be the third time I participate and not everyone can say that.”
