Göppingen leave no doubt

Four days after setting up a 10-goal advantage in the first leg in Poland, Frisch Auf Göppingen were never in doubt against Górnik Zabrze on Wednesday about reaching the men's EHF Cup group phase.

The German Bundesliga side became the first team to advance with a 38:29 win at home, nearly copying the 39:29 result from the first leg.

Having won 39:29 in Poland, Göppingen had virtually secured their access to the group phase already before hosting Górnik Zabrze for Wednesday's return.

The match in the EWS Arena had gathered 3,000 spectators who saw the home team take things a bit relaxed in the first half. The guests even led 11:10 after 17 minutes.

But Göppingen turned the tide and was already three goals ahead at half-time (19:16).

In the last 30 minutes, the hosts increased the pace and their grip on the game and extended their lead to let a nine-goal win follow their 10-goal victory from the first match.

Two 33-year-olds became the most scoring players for their respective teams as left back Lars Kaufmann for Göppingen and centre back Maciej Scigaj for Górnik Zabrze each netted seven times.
