Danish talents in semi-final despite defeat

A 22:20 defeat to France in the last main round match could not stop Denmark from qualifying for the semi-finals at the Women's 17 EHF EURO in Skopje.

Already before the last match day of the main round the Danish talents secured their semi-final berth.

A 33:30 win against Croatia in the second to last match was enough to the until then undefeated Danish girls to book the ticket for the semi-final, and the French win did not change the fact that Hungary follow Denmark to the medal round from Main Round Group 2.

The Hungarians final road to the semi-final also went over a three-goal win against Croatia. 32:29 did Hungary win in the match, which gave them their access to the round of the last four.

In their semi-final on Friday in the Macedonian capital, Hungary will be facing Russia who have not lost a single point in the tournament yet.

Russia have been considered to be among the hottest favourites for the title, and they definitely did not disappoint those who believe in them, as they played their last main round match against Slovenia.

No less than 40:27 were the Slovenian girls beaten, and the fact that Russia were already sure to win Group 1 of the main round before the match did not seem to make the young Russians relax.

The other semi-final in the Jane Sandanski arena in Skopje will be between Denmark and Romania.

The Romanians secured their entry into the semis through a 28:21 win against Sweden, but the Romanian win was not an easy as the final result might indicate.

Actually, Sweden were leading 8:5 in the first half, and at half-time, the score was still equal, 11:11.

In the second half, however, Romania were the far better team and cruised into the semi-final with a seven goal win.

On Friday, the first semi-final between Russia and Hungary will be played at 18.00 hrs local time, and the match between Denmark and Romania will follow at 20:30 hrs.
