FINALS REVIEW: University from Poland claimed the trophy in the women’s tournament, while hosts clinched the title in the men’s final.
Minho and Vincent earn titles
The men’s team University of Minho and the women’s team of University of Vincent were crowned champions of the European Universities Championship in Braga, Portugal.
In the men’s final Minho, who were hosting the tournament, defeated University of Cordoba from Spain for the second time in as many days (24:21) after the Portuguese team dominated also in their concluding group phase match (29:23).
Fabio Antunes paved the way for Minho to the title with 12 goals and clinched not only the championship’s best scorer title with 50 goals in six games, but also the MVP award. His teammate Bruno Dias was awarded the best goalkeeper of the tournament.
In the bronze medal game University of Strassbourg from France beat HfPV Wiesbaden from Germany 32:31.
Vincent featuring several players of the Women’s EHF Champions League participant MKS Selgros Lublin completed their perfect record of five wins from five matches by beating Wiesbaden 34:22 in the final. Karolina Konsur led her team with six goals, but the overall scoring title went to Fatma gül Sakizcan from Turkish side Marmara with 54 goals.
Wiesbaden’s Sarah Harnisch was awarded the best goalkeeper of the tournament, while Jennifer Bermejo from Spanish team of University Malaga took the MVP trophy. In the bronze medal game Bermejo steered her team with seven goals to the win against another German University of Constance (31:21).
EHF support
The event was supported by the EHF as part of a cooperation agreement with the European Universities Sports Association (EUSA). Parallel to the competition the EHF has been organising a clinic for its young referees programme.
