Belgium take another two points

Belgium claimed their second win against Cyprus on the road to the EHF EURO 2018 on Saturday, bringing them one step closer to the next stage of qualification for the big event.

Only the three group winners in this qualification phase advance to the next stage.

Group A: Belgium vs. Cyprus 30:20 (12:7)

Cyprus entered Saturday’s match out of contention for the next round – but a match is a match, and the visitors showed they were ready to fight for the win just as Belgium were.

For Belgium there was a little more at stake. The hosts of Saturday’s match will face Greece in their final EHF EURO 2018 Qualification Phase 1 matches in June, and need as many points as they can have ahead of the crucial meetings.

Cyprus were the first on the board in Herstal, but it was not long before Belgium took the lead.

By midway through the half Belgium had created a four-goal advantage (7:3, 16th minute), which they increased to five by half-time.

Cyprus fought through the second 30 minutes, but Belgium continued to increase their lead until the end. In the 48th minute, the home side were ten ahead (24:14) and a Belgian victory was imminent.

The hosts finished the game with another convincing win that will fill them with confidence ahead of their upcoming matches against Greece.

Damian Kedziora was Belgium’s top scorer with seven goals from eight attempts, while Yiannos Nikiforou scored four for Cyprus.
