Veszprém close Group C with dominant show of force

Group C winners MKB-MVM Veszprém once again demonstrated their fire power with a dominant 34:20 victory at Montpellier Agglomeration HB.

The French side were never in the game and suffered their heaviest-ever home defeat in the competition at the hands of the brutal Hungarian champions, who had already won their group for a third straight season.

Montpellier Agglomeration HB (FRA) vs MKB-MVM Veszprém (HUN) 20:34 (9:14)

The visitors made an excellent start, despite missing Christian Zeitz and Chema Rodriguez, after they were deemed not fit enough to play.

The hosts piled on the pressure early in the game, but goalkeeper Mirko Alilovic saved two of three penalties as defensive stalwart Timuzsin Schuch received a red card in the 17th minute.

Veszprém took control and although Dragan Gajic and Diego Simonet hauled Montpellier back into contention, the Hungarian side remained out in front as Mate Lekai consistently found his teammates in scoring positions.

Simonet did score a breath-taking in-flight goal, but it was not enough to pull his team level.

There was no let up after the break as Peter Gulyás and Gasper Marguc added to the visitors' lead, and the game was over as a contest long before the final whistle as the advantage reached double figures.

Veszprém had won 30:24 at Montpellier exactly six years ago, which had then been the club's heaviest home defeat until today.
