ROUND REVIEW: Following successful double-header encounters, the Russian and the Hungarian top team are already among the last eight
Zvenigorod, FTC reach Cup Winners’ Cup quarter-finals
Russian side Zvezda Zvenigorod and FTC-Rail Cargo Hungaria have already reached the quarter-finals of the Women’s Cup Winners’ Cup after both successfully steered through their Last 16 double-headers over the weekend.
Zvenigorod, who played against HC Podravka Vegeta, arguably had the harder passage of the two.
Having won the first leg on Friday 24:21, Zvenigorod lost the return match on Sunday 25:28. However, as Sunday’s match technically was Podravka’s home game – both games were played in Croatia – the visitors proceeded to the next round courtesy of the away goals-rule.
The decision was much clearer in the weekend’s second double-header as FTC-Rail Cargo Hungaria welcomed Norwegian side Tertnes Bergen in Budapest.
The visitors were not able to threaten FTC who won the first match on Saturday 44:27 and the second leg on Sunday 41:26.
Five other Last 16 encounters saw their first leg being played this weekend, and things are going well for last year’s Women’s EHF FINAL4 participants FC Midtjylland.
On Saturday the Danish top team took a major step towards the quarter-finals as they won their away game against Romanian H.C.M. Roman 24:20.
Also well on their way are MKS Selgros Lublin from Poland who took a 27:18 away win against Danish Randers HK on Sunday.
In the other matches Byasen Trondheim beat WHC Radnicki Kragujevac 39:24, SERCODAK Dalfsen lost 27:29 to Fleury Loiret Handball, and Siofok KC – Galerius Fürdö beat Hypo Niederösterreich 25:20.
