EHF Congress one step to strengthen handball in Ireland

The 12th EHF Congress opened in Dublin on Friday with the strong wish expressed by Irish Olympic Handball Association that it will strengthen the sport and support the IOHA in its efforts to firmly establish it on the Irish sports map.

"Ireland is famous for many things," IOHA President Fintan Lyons said in his opening speech, quoting - among others - the Guiness beer, American presidents (22 of them had Irish roots) and software companies (such as Intel).

"It is the dream of the IOHA that one day handball will be added to this list. And we will work hard to achieve this."

Paschal Donahue , Ireland's Minister for Transport, Tourism and Sport, was also among the honorary speakers on Friday morning.

He acknowledged that handball currently is not one of the major sport in Ireland, but said that has grown very quickly with participation in primary and secondary schools increasing by 10 per cent in the past year.
