Semi-finals at Women's Youth World Championships an all-European affair

Romania, Montenegro, Germany and Denmark will fight four the title at the Women's Youth World Championship in FYR Macedonia after the four teams won their respective quarter-finals on Wednesday.

Romania were the first to progress and they literally stormed into the semi-final. At half-time they led 22:12 against Netherlands, and even though the second half was a slightly more even affair the eventual 36:22 Romanian victory was never threatened.

It was a much tighter affair in the second quarter-final between Brazil and Montenegro which was not decided until the last minute.

Montenegro had taken a 11:10-lead into half-time, but with 15 minutes left to play Brazil had turned the match around and led 18:14.

However, Montenegro came back into game, the score stood at 24:24 with 20 seconds left when Montenegrin Durdina Malovic scored in the game's last attack to send her team to the semi-final.

While everyone had expected the Montengrin quarter-final to go into extra time, the match between Russia and Denmark actually did.

After 60 minutes the score had stood at 22:22, but Russia ran out of steam in the 10 minutes that were added and Denmark took a 29:26 victory.

Just before Germany had fought down a favoured Korean side 35:29. Korea had not given away a single point in the tournament before and were considered one of the event's favourites.

In the semi-finals in the city of Ohrid Romania face Montenegro at 17:00 hrs local time and Germany play against Denmark at 19:30 hrs.

Both matches are streamed live.
