Gustav Burziwal passes away

The EHF has the sad duty of reporting the passing away of Gustav Burziwal in Vienna.

A well-respected member of the Austrian handball family, Gustav was a former IHF referee and officiated in numerous top-level matches in the European Cup and World Championships with his partner, Wolfgang Drabesch.

Following his refereeing career he became an EHF delegate, playing an active role as a delegate right from the formation of the EHF in 1991. His last nomination for the EHF was in the Men’s EHF Cup match between Füchse Berlin and HCM Constanta on 16 March 2014.

Michael Wiederer, EHF Secretary General, said: “Gustl dedicated his life to handball, he was a trusted delegate and often nominated for tough matches because of his years of experience in the sport. He was also a familiar face in the EHF Office in Vienna thanks to his regular attendance at our draw events.

"He will be much missed by the whole of the European handball family and I would like to offer my deepest condolances on behalf of the EHF to his many friends and colleagues."
