Stephan tees off for charity

Daniel Stephan, former German international and World Handball Player of the Year 1998, is one of many celebrities taking part in this year’s VELUX EHF FINAL4 charity golf tournament in support of the German Cancer Aid.

On the eve of the event in Cologne’s LANXESS arena, stars from the world of sport and golf players from all over the world meet to hit the fairways at Golf & Country Club Velderhof for a good cause. Those who wish to take part in the tournament can find further information on ehfFINAL4.com and the entry fee will be donated to the German Cancer Aid.

Daniel Stephan has taken up the challenge once again and he spoke about trying to prove himself on the greens for the third year in a row.

ehfFINAL4.com: This is your third visit to the VELUX EHF FINAL4. What makes it special for you?

Daniel Stephan: 20,000 spectators, an awesome atmosphere, four extraordinary teams and a spectacular supporting program. What else could you want?

ehfFINAL4.com: You are an ambassador for HANDBALL HELPS!, which supports the German Cancer Aid. Why is it important to get involved in such causes?

Daniel Stephan: In my life I was very lucky thanks to sport and I want to return some of that and try to help people find their own luck.

ehfFINAL4.com: What activities have you participated in to raise money for the charity?

Daniel Stephan: I was an ambassador at the previous tournament and managed to raise 5,000 euro for the German Cancer Aid.

ehfFINAL4.com: How long have you been playing golf? Did you play during your handball career?

Daniel Stephan: I did not play golf during my career as a professional handball player, because I was actually a little sceptical about the sport. However, as soon as I started playing I was very enthusiastic and happy to have taken up golf. In the past I have had so much fun on the golf course that I just don’t want to go on without it.

ehfFINAL4.com: What do you expect of this year’s event?

Daniel Stephan: (smiling) I assume that I will win it this time! I think it will be again a very enjoyable event with plenty of people having fun playing golf and I hope that we can collect a very nice amount of money for the German Cancer Aid.
