Fie Woller claims first trophy in Budapest

Just before the opening throw-off of the first MVM EHF FINAL4 in Budapest the young generation of players got under the spotlight in the Papp Laszlo Sportarena as the Danish prodigy Fie Woller was awarded the best young player of the 2013/14 Women’s EHF Champions League.

Almost one month before the final tournament fans as well as a professional jury were asked to look back at the closing season and cast their vote in order to decide this season's best young female player under 23 years.

And their ultimate decision? Danish left wing of FC Midtjylland, only 21-year-old, got most votes of all 10 nominated rising stars.

She was presented with the trophy by Gabor Karpati, marketing and media manager for Hungary ahead of the first semi-final game.

"It's so nice to be here, the spirit is amazing, everybody is smiling,“ Woller said smiling already at the Friday’s media call at the Aquincum Hotel.

“My twin sister Cecilie, who had been playing for FC Midtjylland earlier, will be the first one who will get to know – if I should win the award,“ she revealed on Friday not knowing the result yet.

Already the nomination for best young player was a tremendous boost for her.

“It was a nice pat on the back,“ she said also mentioning her teammate Trine Ostergaard, who was also voted for.

With FC Midtjylland she waged a difficult but also a very successful campaign in the 2013/14 season. After beating Randers HK one week ago in the semi-final of the Danish league they are only one step away from the title as the triple-winners of the Women's EHF Champions League Viborg HK await them in the final.

However, Woller and her team came across their biggest challenge on Saturday: facing the defending champions of the European top flight Györi Audi ETO KC in the semi-final.

“We also have the pocket full of strengths. We are fighters“, the Danish blonde with 21 on her back said before the game.

In this game Woller faced also last year's winner of best young player award, playmaker Aniko Kovacsics. Both were also nominated for the title in 2011/12, furthermore they were already nominated twice.
