Cleverly leaving Hamburg for KIF

32-year-old goalkeeper Marcus Cleverly will join KIF Kolding Kobenhavn on a three-year deal from HSV Hamburg at the end of this season.

Cleverly, who is leaving HSV after only one season in the club, has been linked with Kolding Kobenhavn for some time and the transfer was finally confirmed on Sunday.

Marcus Cleverly was part of the Danish team to win the EHF EURO 2012 in Serbia, but he was not called up for the EHF EURO 2014 in Denmark last month.

“They (KIF Kolding Kobenhavn) have a fantastic team, of which I would very much like to be a part, and I think they are the flagship of Danish handball,” Marcus Cleverly told Danish TV.

“I have not played in the Danish league for 10 years, so obviously many things have changed in the meantime. However, it will be great to come home and live closer to my family without going a step down in my career,” added Cleverly.

Teaming up with Hvidt

In KIF Kolding København, he will be partner Kasper Hvidt in the KIF goalkeeper duo.

Recently, Hvidt extended his contract with the club until the summer of 2016 and the 38-year-old veteran was keen to welcome his new colleague.

“If we are going to fulfill our ambition of reaching the final rounds in Europe and be strong in the Danish league at the same time, we need two good players in every position, including the goal,” said Kasper Hvidt.

KIF Kolding Kobenhavn´s current reserve keeper Soren Westphal will be leaving the club after this season. His destination is unknown as of now.
