Boarding completed in the Cup Winners' Cup

With two teams having qualified for last weekend, four teams arriving from the EHF Champions League Group Matches, and ten further teams qualifying from Round 3 this weekend, the Last 16 of the Cup Winners' Cup are complete.

The draw of the Last 16 will take place on Tuesday, 19 November at 11:00 hrs at the EHF Office in Vienna. The first leg of the Last 16 is scheduled for 1-2 February, the second leg will follow one week later.

Already last weekend, Danish Team Tvis Holstebro and Norwegian Byasen Trondheim qualified. This weekend, ten more teams made it from Round 3, and with Hypo Niederösterreich, FTC Rail Cargo Hungaria, Metz Handball and HC Podravka Vegeta joining as third placed teams in the Champions League group stage, the Last 16 are now complete.

The only double-header this weekend was played in Salerno, Italy, where Jomi Salerno took on Tertnes Bergen. After a 33:33 draw in the first leg Saturday, the Norwegian visitors left no doubt Sunday, as they went on to the next round with a 25:16 win.

Another Scandinavian team, Lugi HF, seemed to have the edge against Buxtehuder SV, whom the Swedish side had defeated 26:24 away. In Sunday's return match in Lund, however, 1,310 spectators saw the German team win 27:22 and qualify for the Last 16 with a 51:48 win on average. Already at half-time were Buxtehude leading by six goals (12:6), and they never gave away the lead.

“We stood well in our defence, especially in the first half. Compared to the first match were we better at reading our opponents' play and to act accordingly,” Buxtehude coach Dirk Leun told his club's website.

Cercle Dijon Bourgogne also appeared to have a good chance to proceed in the tournament, having only lost 24:22 away to HC Odense. However, the 1,500 spectators in the Palais des Sport JM Geoffroy in Dijon got a bit of a shock, as the Danes were leading 15:8 at half time. In the second half did the French women get a bit closer, but only for a while, and at the end the visitors won 25:19 and 49:41 on aggregate.

A 27:25 home win against Veszprem Barabas Dunatakarek turned out not to be enough for Gorodnichanka, when the Belarusian outfit visited the Hungarian hosts for the return match. Veszprem won by four, 31:27 and moved on to the next round with a total win of 56:54.

A 25:23 win in Romania against ASC Corona 2010 Brasov had given HC Lokomotiva Zagreb the edge before the second match – and through a win with exactly the same digits Dom Sportova Hall, the Croatians could put the Last 16 ticket in their pocket.

Rostov-Don also had a two goal win with them back home from their visit to Turkish Muratpasa Belediyesi SK – and that 26:24 win seemed to be more than enough, when the Russian team played at home. 2,500 spectators in the Palace of Sport saw Rostov-Don win the second leg no less than 39:19 and remove any doubt which team was to be among the last 16.
