EHF sign Fair Play Memorandum of Understanding

The European Handball Federation met with the European Fair Play Movement in Vienna on Thursday, 5 September to sign a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) in the matters of sports, tolerance and fair play.

The EHF initiated campaigns for Fair Play in the sport as early as 2002. At the 2002 EHF Congress, the member federations took an initiative to set up a code of “sportsmanlike conduct” to create a positive image for handball and spread the message of Fair Play.

A number of Fair Play procedures were introduced to the EHF EURO 2004 and have been present at EHF events ever since.

Examples of Fair Play at events are team mascots with a Fair Play Slogan conceived by the EHF, the announcement of the fair play text prior to each match, as well as pre and post-match high fives / handshakes by both sets of players and officials.

Signing the MoU were EHF President Jean Brihault, EHF Secretary General Michael Wiederer and EHPM President Christian Hinterberger.

A strong link between the two is Charalambot Lottas, who is heavily involved in handball, recipient of an EHF Special Award, and is an Executive Committee Member of the EFPM.

The MoU between the EHF and EFPM will lead to a joint venture with common activities to promote the strengthening of Fiar Play, tolerance, peach and understanding through sport and in particular handball.
