HSV and Barcelona learn Superglobe fate

The 2013 IHF Super Globe draw took place on Saturday evening 27 July on the fringes of the Men’s Junior World Championship in Sarajevo, Bosnia Herzegovina.

Conducted by Leon Kalin (Chairman of the IHF COC Commission) and Mohamed Gaber al Mulla (Secretary General of the Qatar Handball Association) the groups of the preliminary round for the competition in Doha, Qatar were drawn.

VELUX EHF Champions League winner HSV Hamburg were drawn in Group A and will take on tournament host Al-Sadd (Qatar), wild card team El-Jeish (Qatar) and Oceania champions Sydney University (Australia). Al-Sadd, as the tournament organiser, had the right to choose their group and chose to be placed in Group A.

FC Barcelona, who lost to HSV in June's final in Cologne, were a late addition to the competition after the withdrawal of Atlético Madrid. The Spanish champions will be in Group B alonside African champions Etoile Sportive du Sahel from Tunisia, Asian title holders Al-Rayyan (Qatar) and the Pan-American representatives Taubate from Brazil. 

The preliminary round will be played in two groups from 25-27 August, followed by semi-finals and placement matches, with the final on 30 August. All matches will take place at the Al-Gharafa hall in Doha.
