New energy for Serbian beach handball

Serbia will compete at both male competitions at the 2013 European Beach Handball Championship as one of the teams and Serbian head-coach Saša Kuburović expects a great tournament in Randers, Denmark.

“Day by day, championship by championship, beach handball is much more competitive and very few teams can be seen as an outsider.

“The only way to have a good result is to be fully concentrated on each period of the game and always give your maximum. Even then, it will be nice to have a bit of luck,” said Kuburović, who outlined the ambitions for his teams:

“Our youth team will arrive almost without any experience, but I really believe that during the championship, the level of our play will increase and that we will be highly competitive.

“With this young team we look forward to obtain experience and to feel much more comfortable on the sand before next year's championship and maybe then we will be brave enough to promise one of the medals,” said Kuburović.

Mix of youth and experience

“The senior team is the mix of experience and some new players. Unfortunately, we are not able to have our best possible line-up.

“We will go from one match to another, always looking to the next 20 minutes. Our goal is to progress for the quarter-finals, which will be the most important match for us.

Maybe, 13 July will be our happy day; I am looking forward to see it. Serbian beach handball has already made some important results on the international level, both in national teams and club competition, but as Serbian national team we have never won a medal in senior competition.

“For sure, local organisers in Randers, DHF and EHF will make some new standards in organising such event, so it could be fantastic to play some important match in that pinnacle of the Beach Handball season in Europe - on the final day´. However, the real objective is to qualify for the World Championship next year.

Reinforced with new enthusiasm

“Ten years ago we started very strong with a few teams traveling a lot, playing EBT tournaments all around Europe, but in meantime we partly lost that energy.

“Now we have some new dedicated people, we are reinforced with new enthusiasm. Less than two weeks ago we held a course for national referees and officials.

“Last weekend in Novi Sad there was a very good EBT tournament played and there will be some more competition, so we can look forward with optimism to the future of beach handball in Serbia. I believe that results from Randers will have a positive impact too,” concludes Kuburović.
