Kolding København veteran vows to return

KIF Kolding København’s 38-year-old winger Boris Schnuchel has torn the anterior cruciate ligament in his left knee, but refuses to give in.

Many athletes would probably consider giving up their career, if they sustained a serious injury such as a torn cruciate ligament at the age of 38, but not Boris Schnuchel.

The left winger, who has played for Kolding since 1997, and who has the club record with nearly 600 matches, is keen on continuing his career, even though he is looking at a long break after suffering the ACL tear in the first leg of the Danish championship finals against Aalborg Håndbold.

“My operation went very well, and I can already see improvements in the knee every day. The doctors told me that apart from this injury, I have knees like a 20 year old, so I hope to be able to limit my break to around five months,” Boris Schnuchel told ehfCL.com.

Recovery from an injury like that usually requires up to nine months, but the former Danish international hopes to be back considerably sooner and although the injury will cost him at least part of KIF´s VELUX EHF Champions League adventure this coming season, the thought of ending his career did not even occur to him.

“If there had been complications, which is often the case with this type of injury, and more operations had been necessary, I might have thought about it. However, I want to end my career in style, not by being forced by an injury.

“Furthermore, the chance to play against teams like THW Kiel, Kielce and Atlético Madrid in the Champions League has definitely increased my motivation for a comeback as soon as possible,” concluded Schnuchel, who has one year left of his current contract with Kolding København.
