Kiel fans will watch crucial match on home court

10,250 spectators shouted for THW Kiel in the sold-out Sparkassen-Arena in Kiel on Sunday, when their club turned an incredible quarter-final match in the VELUX EHF Champions League against MKB Veszprém around.

This Saturday, they will gather at the same place to cheer on their team. However, there will be no players on the court this time.

THW Kiel and partners, including TV right holder Eurosport, have organised a huge public viewing event in the arena for the re-match in Veszprém, where Kiel hope to break the curse of no defending champions reaching the VELUX EHF FINAL4 the following season.

The match will be broadcasted live on the big video screens in the Sparkassen-Arena. About 150 THW fans will travel to Veszprem and the rest will cross their fingers at home, watching the live action and singing their chants.

It is the first ever public viewing of a THW match in their arena and there will be a big side programme with music and entertainment alongside the main show.

“Our partners, especially the EHF and Eurosport, were excited by this idea.

“Knowing that the fans at home stand as one behind them and cross their fingers should give our players wings in Veszprem,” said THW manager Klaus Elwardt.

THW won the first leg of the tie 32:31, thanks to a remarkable comeback after being down by six goals in the middle of the second half.
