Damnjanović joining Viborg

Serbian national team player Sanja Damnjanović is joining Danish top club Viborg on a two year contract valid from this summer.

The 25-year-old backcourt player is joining from Croatian Podravka Vegeta, for whom she scored 50 goals in their six games in the EHF Champions League Group Matches this season.

“The signing of Sanja Damnjanović is a tremendous boost to our ambition to get back among the top clubs in Europe. She is flexible with a fine ability to read the game and her team-mates, and her scoring statistics speak for themselves. In the national team as well as in the Champions League has she proved that she can score many goals against the strongest defences and goalkeepers in the world,” Viborg´s sports director Susanne Munk Wilbek.

Damnjanović was awarded best player on the left back position at the EHF EURO 2012 in Serbia in December last year and nominated for the All Star team of the championship.

In Viborg she is going to be a – highly competent – replacement to Danish national team player Pernille Holst Larsen, who is leaving after this season for the new ambitious Copenhagen team København Håndbold, who will be playing on current league club FIF´s license from next season.

Viborg also have high expectations in Sanja Damnjanović´s defending abilities.

“Apart from being a fantastic attacking player, she is also extremely strong in the defence, where she uses her understanding of the game very well.

"So we see her as a complete player with the right age, who will also be able to contribute to our team through her way of being and her Balkan style,” Susanne Munk Wilbek found.

"I had offers from many top clubs and I chose Viborg after consultations with the team's former stalwart Bojana Popović, who advised me to join them. She told me I would blend in seamlessly and find it very easy to adapt to their system. Viborg will head into next season's Champions League with the highest ambitions after signing a plethora of top quality players, I think they are still looking for wingers," Damnjanović told Belgrade daily Sportski Žurnal.
