Romania win Carpathian Trophy

Although coach Gheorghe Tadici had left every player from Oltchim Rm. Valcea (currently in preparation for the Women’s EHF Champions League semi-final against Györ), the Romanian women’s national team won the Carpathian Trophy. The test tournament was played in Craiova, Romania.

The winner was decided on goal difference, as the EHF EURO 2012 participants Romania and Germany were equal with five points.

Thanks to the 30:23 victory against Olympic bronze medalists Spain, the Romanian ‘A’ team won the traditional tournament, which was being used by all three nations as preparation for the 2013 World Championship play-off matches.

Romania 'A' and Germany drew 24:24 and won their respective matches against the Romanian 'B' selection and the disappointing team from Spain, who could only manage one point at the tournament, even with their top squad including the two Oltchim Valcea players Silvia Navarro and Alexandrina Barbosa.

In the World Championship play-offs in June, Romania face Slovakia, Spain face FYR Macedonia and Germany face Ukraine.

The aggregate winners of the play-off matches will qualify for the 2013 World Championship in Serbia this December.

The results of the Carpathian Trophy in Craiova:

Germany - Spain 27:23 (16:8)
Romania 'A' - Romania 'B' 35:26 (16:13)

Romania 'B' - Spain 25:25 (16:13)
Romania 'A' - Germany 24:24 (13:14)

Romania 'B' - Germany 25:29 (12:14)
Romania 'A' - Spain 30:23 (15:12)
