Kristjansson joins Bjerringbro-Silkeborg

Icelandic international Kari Kristjan Kristjansson will be joining Danish VELUX EHF Champions League participant Bjerringbro-Silkeborg on a two year contract from German Bundesliga club HSG Wetzlar this summer.

“Bjerringbro-Silkeborg is an ambitious club who want to win every time they enter the court. They are a top three team in Denmark and among the favourites for the championship every year.

“That appealed a lot to me, as I also have the ambition to win every time,” Kari Kristjan Kristjansson said in an official statement, as the transfer was announced.

“The mentality in Denmark is Nordic like in Iceland, and that is why we Icelanders adapt so fast in Denmark,” Kari Kristjansson added.

In Bjerringbro-Silkeborg the 29-year-old line player will be replacing Danish national team player Henrik Toft Hansen who is going the opposite way – to the Bundesliga and HSV Hamburg.

Head coach Carsten Albrektsen is understandably content with having found a competent successor to Toft Hansen.

“I am very happy that we have succeeded in adding a further internationally strong player to our squad.

“Kari Kristjan Kristjansson has a lot of experience, and then he is really fine line player. He is a typical Icelandic player with an Icelandic mentality and a big fighting heart,” Albrektsen said.

Kristjansson has played in Europe's top flight for two different clubs in the past; with Hauker in Iceland and GC Amicitia Zürich in Switzerland. 

Bjerringbro-Silkeborg have qualified for the VELUX EHF Champions League Last 16 for the first time in the club's history after securing fourth place in Group C.
