Børge Lund: I’ll play as long as my body will allow

When Norway defeated Lithuania 28:21 away in Group 3 of the qualification tournament for the Men´s EHF EURO 2014, the Norwegian playmaker Børge Lund played his 200th international for his country.

The 33 year old, who plays for German Bundesliga team and Champions League participant Füchse Berlin, is only the sixth Norwegian international in history to reach this milestone.

With his skills and experience, Lund is an extremely important profile in the Norwegian team who has set a straight course towards the final tournament in Denmark.

Eurohandball, com had a talk with Lund about the jubilee, his plans for the future and his female colleuges.

Eurohandball.com: Congratulations on having reached 200 internationals, an as one out of only six Norwegian’s to do so. How do you feel about having reached this milestone?
Børge Lund: Thank you for the congratulations. I have not really given it that much thought that I have reached 200 internationals, but of course the fact that I am one out of only six who have played that many puts it into some kind of perspective.
I have always liked to play in the national team, though, and as long as I find that it is fun to play there, I will go on.

Eurohandball.com: You have turned 33 now. How many more internationals do you expect to play?
Børge Lund: I have not really thought about that yet. I expect to go on as long as my body will allow, but as you said, I have turned 33, so it is hard to say how long I can go on.

Eurohandball.com: Is the fact that EURO 2014 is taking place in your neighbour country Denmark a factor that makes you go on?
Børge Lund: Absolutely. It would be great fun to play a European championship in Denmark, where I expect that we will see more spectators than at the World Championship in Spain. I think we are well on our way to qualifying, and that we can approach the next qualification matches in the spring with a quite relaxed attitude.

Eurohandball.com: You are playing in the Bundesliga which is known to be the physically most demanding league in the world. Do you also think of that, when you say that you are going on as long as your body will?
Børge Lund: Yes, of course, and I also realise that it is the club who pays my wages, so I would never sacrifice the club handball for the national team.

Eurohandball.com: Soon the Norwegian women are going to defend their European title at EURO 2012 in Serbia. Is that also an event that raises interest as a male handball player?
Børge Lund: You ask a rather difficult question there, as I do not usually watch much handball on TV. But if they reach the semi-final and the final, I will probably watch. That is when it becomes exciting. However, I am really impressed by the skills and the consistancy in our women´s team, and by their ability to win time after time.
