Currently top of Group C with three wins from three matches, KS Vive Targi Kielce are wary of this weekend’s opponent in the VELUX EHF Champions League – bottom of the group Chambéry.
Kielce on their guard against Chambéry
Before the season start great things were expected from Chambéry Savoie Handball, with many people tipping them to challenge for the top of the group because of their strong line-up. But they lost their first three matches, and may now struggle to reach the Last 16. However, Kielce’s 31-year-old Serbian ace Rastko Stojković told ehfCL.com that they will be taking nothing for granted before their ehfTV Match of the Week on Sunday (19:00 hrs local time).
ehfCL.com: How do you read the situation with Chambéry? Their players are some of the best in the world, and yet they are bottom of the group?
Rastko Stojković: Maybe they have some problems in the team. When we look at their players, they are one of the best team in group. But they aren’t playing very well at the moment. Their last game in the VELUX EHF Champions League they lost in Russia, against St Petersburg, which was a big surprise and in my opinion they could play much better. But we are only thinking about our shape. We must play well in every single match in the VELUX EHF Champions League, and be consistent. We will need to be on top form in France this weekend.
ehfCL.com: Before the start of the season Chambéry’s coach, Philipe Gardent, left the club. Could this be one of their main problems?
Stojković: I wasn’t thinking about them much until now, a few days before the game. We need to prepare for this match, like every match. When we have watched video of Chambéry we will be able to say what is their best points or worst points, where we must attack, etc… Only then will I be able to tell if their coach’s departure has played a part. For now, I’m happy that Chambéry aren’t playing so well. But everything will be decided on Sunday in Le Phare hall.
ehfCL.com: Do you know any of the Balkan players from Chambéry? Bičanić and Basić?
Stojković: I have met them a few times, but we don’t know each other so well. They are very good players. But like I said, something is missing there - I don’t know what. Anyway, the game on Sunday will not be easy for us.
ehfCL.com: Do you share common opinion that Bertrand Gille is the biggest star at Chambéry now?
Stojković: A few years ago he was one of the best line players in the world. Last year he didn’t play so well. But he has great experience and can still play a really fantastic game.
