Viborg ask their fans for help

Serious injury problems have made Viborg HK – runners-up in the Danish women´s league in the 2011/12 season – take an unusual step. The club, which won the Women´s EHF Champions League in 2009 and 2010, is asking its fans for financial help to reinforce the team.

After Grit Jurack´s recent career stop and with Norwegian international Amanda Kurtovic sidelined for at least the rest of 2012 with a shoulder injury, Viborg are particularly weakened on the right side of their attack.

Furthermore, backcourt player and defence specialist Rikke Skov as well as left winger Maria Fisker are also injured at the moment, and this generally critical injury situation has made the club cry out for help.

“Our ambition is to reach the finals of the Danish championship and the Group Matches of the Champions League, but that ambition has suffered a severe blow through this serious injury situation," Viborg HK´s director Peter Cassøe said.

"Even though our girls - no matter how many they are – do their utmost every time they enter the court, it is beyond any doubt that an extra backcourt player at an international level is extremely needed.”

The club´s sports director Susanne Munk Wilbek is in touch with a left-handed backcourt player who can score goals as well as defend.

The club does not want to reveal her identity at present, but fans and others are asked  to buy shares at 500 Danish kroner (about € 65,-) a piece to finance the signing of the new player who is reported to have played more than 45 EHF Champions League matches and represented her country at several European championships.

In return for the money, people get tickets and a recently published book about Viborg HK.

Will to support

And the will to support seems to be big among Viborg´s fans and spectators. Tuesday at noon director Peter Cassøe made an estimate that half of the necessary amount had been provided already.

“This is awesome! Even though we hoped that the will to support would be there, we had no idea how this initiative would be received. However, I can only say that we have been overwhelmed by the support that has steamed towards us. It has been confirmed that people still love the women´s team of Viborg HK and want to support it in difficult times,” Peter Cassøe said.

On September 22 and 23 Viborg are going to try and qualify for the group phase of the Women´s EHF Champions League, when they host Qualification group 1 with Balonmano Bera Bera (ESP), Vistal Laczpol (POL) and LC Brühl (SUI) as the other participants.
