Thomas Mogensen quits national team

One of the most important profiles in Denmark´s national team in recent years, playmaker Thomas Mogensen, has decided to quit the national team

“We are looking ahead at an extremely busy season with SG Flensburg-Handewitt, where we are going to play in the Champions League, and considering the busy summer we have had, with a training camp and the Olympics, I think that this is best for me, ” said Thomas Mogensen in an official statement on Tuesday 28 August.

However, the 29 year old playmaker, who has represented his country 88 times, leaves a door open for a comeback at a later time.

“I am still keen on playing handball for many years to come, also in the national team," he said.

"However, in order not to lose my motivation and in order not to get under a too much pressure, physically and mentally, I think that this is the best solution for me in a longer perspective.

"The EURO on home ground in 2014 is still a big goal for me, and at that time I hope to be able to perform at my peak, if I am part of the national team, when the time comes. There are no guarantees in life, though, and that goes for me too,” added Thomas Mogensen.

Thomas Mogensen is the second player who has said goodbye to the Danish national team this summer. Immediately after the London Olympics, another backcourt player, Lasse Boesen from KIF Kolding København, announced that he will step down from the national team – and in 32 year old Boesen´s case the decision is permanent.
