Branka Zec: “The future is waiting for us”

The last round game in EHF EURO 2012 qualification will only be for prestige for the Slovenian national team. One of the key figures, Branka Zec, is determined to defeat Austria in this goodbye game.

ehf-euro.com: Do you agree you showed one of the best performances in EHF EURO 2012 qualifications in the Thursday match against Sweden?

Branka Zec: If we look at the result it was good considering our opponents. But we lost, which is what a sportsman doesn’t want to. If we examine our play, though, we can feel satisfied. It was one of our best games this season.

ehf-euro.com: Media and spectators were especially impressed by the defence…

Branka Zec: I’m really happy because we didn’t give up at any moment, even though the game against Sweden didn’t mean anything from the result perspective. Aggressive playing and great covering of opponents made them a bit nervous. It was easier for me to save shots, too.

ehf-euro.com: Slovenia didn’t qualify for the EHF EURO 2012 tournament. You missed your chance against the Czech Republic. How do you evaluate that performance?

Branka Zec: Yes, it’s a pity we couldn’t make it. If I’m honest, we didn’t deserve it with that kind of play against the Czech Republic. For sure I am disappointed, but our team is young and that’s why I believe we will have our chances. The future is waiting for us.

ehf-euro.com: There is one game waiting for you against Austria on Saturday. What are your expectations?

Branka Zec: I said in a joke before the Sweden game, we can lose to the vice-champions of Europe but we have to win against our neighbours. I believe we are better, and that the quality is on our side.

ehf-euro.com: Even though you are playing with only 12 players?

Branka Zec: Yes. You see from last to this year our national team was changing all the time. From 28 players only 12 are able to play now. Can you imagine? But we believe in ourselves and we want to finish qualification with victory.

The draw for EHF EURO 2012 is to be announced.
