The coach will bid farewell after the EHF EURO 2012 qualifications.
Voina’s last two games for Romania
Radu Voina will end his tenure as the coach of Romania’s women handball team after the games against Portugal and Greece, the final ones for the EHF EURO 2012 qualifications.
The women’s team of Romania didn’t qualify for the Olympic Games in London, after losing against France (19:24), Montenegro (23:34) and winning against Japan (28:26) in the Olympic Qualification tournament organized in France.
Therefore, Radu Voina will end by mutual consent his contract with the Romanian Handball Federation after the games against Portugal and Greece, the last ones for the EHF EURO 2012 qualifications. Romania is not qualified yet, but a win against Portugal on the 30th May would mathematically see Romania qualified for EHF EURO 2012.
“The team is not good enough. This is the truth that everyone is afraid of in Romania. I already said that I will quit the team three months ago, no matter what happened in France. These results didn’t matter for me, my decision was taken. I wanted to qualify for the Olympic Games, especially for the girls”, Voina announced on Sunday.
Cristian Gatu, the President of Romania’s Handball Federation, said that the Federation’s priority will be finding a new, unattached coach: “Mr. Voina was both Oltchim’s and Romania’s coach. However, this is not a good idea, so we will try and find an unattached coach or a foreign one. Our new coach will be announced in two or three weeks’ time. His or her objective will be to qualify Romania for the Olympic Games in 2016”.
