Iceland without Gudjonsson

After Olafur Stefansson, another experienced Icelandic player has cancelled his participation in the EHF EURO in Serbia: playmaker Snorri Steinn Gudjonsson has quit due to ‘personal reasons’ as his wife has just given birth to their daughter.

For Iceland, it’s the first ever EHF EURO event without former World Handball Player of the year, Olafur Stefansson, who is suffering from a knee injury.

After Gudjonsson’s withdrawal, national team coach Gudmundur Gudmundsson has travelled to Serbia with 17 players, but will reduce this to 15 at the Technical Meeting on Sunday.

On Monday, the Bronze medallist of the EHF EURO 2010 will play their first match in Serbia against Croatia, after which they’ll face Slovenia and Norway in their Preliminary Round Group D.

In contrast to some other teams, Iceland is not under such great pressure, as they’ve already booked their ticket for the Olympic Qualification Tournaments by finishing sixth at the 2011 World Championship.

Coach Gudmundur Gudmundsson has nominated these 17 players:

Björgvin Páll Gústavsson / SC Magdeburg, Hreiðar Levý Guðmundsson / Nötteröy, Guðjón Valur Sigurðsson / AG Kopenhagen, Oddur Gretarsson / Akureyri, Arnór Atlason / AG Kopenhagen, Ólafur Guðmundsson / Nordsjælland, Ólafur Bjarki / Ragnarsson HK, Aron Pálmarsson / THW Kiel, Alexander Petersson / Füchse Berlin, Rúnar Kárason / Bergischer HC, Ásgeir Örn Hallgrímsson / TSV Hannover-Burgdorf, Þórir Ólafsson / Kielce, Róbert Gunnarsson / Rhein-Neckar Löwen, Kári Kristján Kristjánsson / Wetzlar, Vignir Svavarsson / TSV Hannover-Burgdorf, Sverre Jakobsson / Großwallstadt, Ingimundur Ingimundarson / Fram
