Norway: EHF EURO without Steinar Ege

Norway will have to play their EHF EURO 2012 campaign in Serbia without their long-term goalkeeper Steinar Ege (39). After 16 years, 262 international matches, and all major tournaments since 2005, Ege has ended his international career in the national team after consultation with NT coach Robert Hedin.

"I understand his decision," Hedin said on the website of the Norwegian Federation.

"It was a hard decision for me. I had the dream of winning a medal at a World or European Championship with Norway and to participate at the Olympic Games, but my body cannot take the strain the EHF EURO in Serbia," Ege said.

He’s had a tough programme with his Danish club AG Kobenhavn in the domestic league and VELUX EHF Champions League and he wants to be able to complete the contract he had extended until 2014.

"I want to re-charge my batteries during the EHF EURO break," Ege said.

Hedin understands Ege’s decision, and now he has the opportunity to give playing time to younger goalkeepers:

"Ole Erevik is doing well at his Danish club Aalborg. He has a lot of experience now and he’ll do an excellent job in Serbia," Hedin said.

Hedin will be Erevik’s club coach in the coming months: The Norwegian Federation gave permission for the former Swedish international to become Aalborg coach until the end of May, alongside his NT duties.

In Serbia, Norway have to face Croatia, Slovenia and Iceland in their Preliminary Round matches in Group C in Vrsac.
