Adriana Nechita: "We are ready to give everything for the win"

Romania’s national handball team is preparing for the World Championship in Brazil, after two easy wins against Portugal and Greece in EHF EURO 2012’s qualification stage. Right-winger Adriana Nechita talks about Romania’s performance and her national team’s objectives for the end of 2011.

ehf-euro.com: Romania is the clear favourite in their group after two clear wins, but still has to play against Serbia, the most difficult opponent. Can you imagine the Serbs causing trouble for Romania?

Adriana Nechita: The matches against Serbia will be played in March, so we still have a lot of time to prepare for them. We all know that our opponents are going to fight for every ball in these matches, and the Serbs are pretty good at that, but Romania has the weapons to defeat them.

In my opinion, Romania has a better squad, with more experienced players than Serbia. We have to win these two games and I have no doubt that the outcome will be the expected one.

ehf-euro.com: Romania is organizing a friendly tournament this weekend, the Carpathian Trophy, during which you will play against Hungary, Serbia and FYR Macedonia. What is your team’s objective for these games?

Adriana Nechita: These games are good tests before the World Championship in Brazil. We are going for the win, of course, but our main objective is to fine-tune up our final details before we fly to South America. After these games, we will know where we stand, and what needs to be tweaked before the tournament in December.

ehf-euro.com: Hungary, Serbia and FYR Macedonia. That’s a good list for a friendly tournament. What is your opinion about these teams?

Adriana Nechita: I’ve already spoken about Serbia. They are a great team, led by an outstanding player, Andrea Lekić. We know Hungary well, as we’ve played against them a lot. They have great players, but are in the middle of big changes.

Unfortunately, neither Serbia, nor Hungary is qualified for the World Championship. However, I don’t think this will affect their playing style and I hope we will engage in some very tense games.

ehf-euro.com: The season is near its halfway point, but you still have a lot to play for. Are you or your teammates feeling tired after these first few months?

Adriana Nechita: Well, you can’t spare any energy during the training sessions or the games, in order to win and achieve your objectives. This season is no different to any previous one. We know what we’ve signed up for and we’ll do everything we can to win all the games we start.

It’s true that we’ve played a lot of matches up until know, some of them rather difficult, some of them not, but we are in great shape and fully focused on what’s going to happen.

ehf-euro.com: Speaking about the near future, what’s Romania’s objective for the World Championship?

Adriana Nechita: Our objective in Brazil is to finish in a good position. It could be first, second or third, but it doesn’t really matter. We’re going in Brazil to win all games, and we are ready to give everything during this tournament. A podium place would be really great for our team.
