Ege looking forward to Serbia
AG Kobenhavn goalkeeper Steinar Ege made a flying start in the team’s VELUX EHF Champions League 31-25 win over Partizan Belgrade in an entertaining Group D opener, having pulled off a string of acrobatic saves to help the Danish title holders to their maiden win in the competition.
The match was not played in their normal home arena but in an EHF EURO 2012 sports hall, Millennium Arena in Vrsac.
29-year old Ege is expected to be one of the pillars in Norway’s bid to progress from a finely balanced Preliminary Round Group D at the EHF EURO 2012 in Serbia next January, when they face Iceland, Croatia and Slovenia.
"The group is very tough and we have to prepare very well and have all our top players fit for the event," Ege told the EHF in an exclusive interview.
"We are all looking forward it, but the focus now is on the club scene and our VELUX EHF Champions League matches," he added.
"I think we have a pretty good chance to get to the VELUX EHF FINAL4 although there are many good teams in the competition. We have a good team and anything is possible," said Ege.
"We had a good game against Partizan in the Millennium Arena, where Norway will play in the Preliminary Round. We really enjoyed the atmosphere and we know it will get even better when it’s filled with more spectators, because it’s a fantastic venue.
The Norwegian fans will have a great time here during the European Championship," he underscored.
Should they progress to the Main Round as one of the top three teams in Group D, Norway will cross paths with the top three teams from Preliminary Round Group C, featuring defending European Champions France, Spain, Russia and Hungary.
Hosts Serbia, Denmark, Poland and Slovakia are in Group A while Germany, Sweden, Czech Republic and Macedonia comprise Group B.
