First EHF EURO 2012 venue sold out!
The Men’s EHF EURO 2012 will be thrown off on 15 January 2012 in Serbia. The tournament will be played until 29 January in the venues Belgrade, Nis, Vrsac and Novi Sad.
Tickets for the Preliminary Round matches of Group B in the Cair Arena in the southern city of Nis have been sold out, the Serbian Handball Federation (RSS) said on Monday.
Only a few VIP seats are still up for grabs in the refurbished venue with a capacity of 4,000 after FYR Macedonian fans bought 2,000 tickets for each of their Preliminary Round matches, while the rest have gone to supporters of Germany, Sweden and the Czech Republic, the other three teams in Group B.
FYR Macedonia will be taking part in their first major tournament since the 2008 World Championship in Croatia and the proximity of Nis to the former Yugoslav republic, whose capital Skopje is only a two-hour drive from the Cair Arena, has benefited both their fans and the organizers, the RSS said.
Leading FYR Macedonian media splashed photos of the venue and said those FYR Macedonian fans who don’t get tickets for the team’s three Preliminary Round matches in Nis will be able to watch them on giant screens in the city’s fan zone.
"The Nis tourist industry appears set to get a real boost from the invasion of FYR Macedonian fans and hence deploying Group B in the Cair Arena was a perfect decision," the RSS added.
FYR Macedonia play Sweden on 15 January 2012, meet Germany two days later and clash with the Czech Republic in their final Preliminary Round game on September 19.
Three teams from each of the four Preliminary Round groups will advance to the Main Round, featuring two groups of six.
The top two from those groups will progress to the Final Round and play in the semi-finals.
The other three Preliminary Round groups will be played in Belgrade’s Pionir Arena, the Millennium Hall in Vrsac and the SPENS Sports Centre in Novi Sad.
