Quarterfinal time at Men’s 2011 Beach Handball EURO

Big games on all four courts at the lagoon of Stella Maris in Umag (CRO) decided the Main Round in the men’s tournament today.

Main Round

Group 1

Croatia have grown to become local heroes at the tournament in their home country. After today’s three victories, they remain the only unbeaten team of all participating nations, having won every single set. They clearly won the group and are now one of the top-favourites for gold. The winners of Preliminary Round Group A – Russia – finished on the runners-up spot. The last two teams snatching a ticket to the quarterfinal are Ukraine and Denmark. For the eastern Europeans the two victories over Turkey and Cyprus were enough, while Denmark’s victories over the same two teams only secured fourth place. Turkey and Cyprus continue tomorrow in Placement Round, where they play for places 9-12

Group 2

Spain finish on top of Group 2, after three straight victories over Norway, Serbia and most important over Hungary who finished behind them. Norway was unlucky against the two top teams but managed to defeat FYR Macedonia which secured third place. Serbia are the last team to go through to the quarterfinals, while Poland and FYR Macedonia go through to Placement Round.

Consolation Round

Greece won both their matches and take top spot after half of the matches played. Sweden defeated Switzerland in their direct duel and put themselves on the runners-up spot.

All matches will be played simultaneously at 11:00 hrs. The semi-finals will be played at 18:30 and 19:30 hrs.
