Decisive stage at Women’s 2011 Beach Handball EURO

Like in Preliminary Round, the matches of the women’s tournament were very close as many teams perform on a very high level, and every team could be beaten by any other. A big part of the group matches of Placement Round 9-14 and the complete Main Round were played today. The results from the Main Round defined the fixtures for tomorrow’s quarterfinals.

Main Round

Group 1

The games between the four teams were extremely tight and led to a lot of shoot-outs. The title defenders from 2009, Italy, were the unlucky ones, as they performed very well in their matches, but ended up with too little points and on place 3. Turkey played well but ended on fourth place and can expect a very hard quarterfinal against the winners from the other group, Norway. In the last game of this group Denmark beat Croatia and took the group victory.

Group 1 – Final Standings
1.Denmark
2.Croatia
3.Italy
4.Turkey

Group 2

Norway and Hungary had already played their duel in the Preliminary Round, which Norway had won. That victory decided the group, as Spain turned out to be unlucky. The Spaniards played very strongly both against Hungary and Norway, and were in the lead for a long time, but lost both games in shoot-outs. Poland are a positive surprise in this tournament despite their three defeats, as they have shown impressive game-play.
