EHF Arbitration Tribunal fines A.E.K.

Serious crowd disturbances took place during the second leg match of the Men’s Challenge Cup Quarterfinal played in Athens, Greece, on 2 April 2011.

The game between A.E.K (GRE) and Partizan Dunav Osiguraje (SRB) was interrupted several times as various objects were thrown onto the playing court and Bengal fires were lightened in the stand during the game.

In addition to those incidents, the spectators invaded the playing court after the final whistle and threw dangerous objects in the direction of the guest team bench. The EHF Arbitration Tribunal looked into the matter and asked for the statements of all involved parties and made the following decision.

A.E.K shall:

  • play the next two games behind closed doors. This punishment, however, is suspended for a period of two years. In case any security incident happens in the next two years, this punishment will take effect
  • pay a fine of € 7,500 for spectators throwing objects onto the court
  • pay a fine of € 5.000 for spectators lightening Bengal fires in the stand
  • pay a fine of € 5,000 for spectators entering the court area with aggressive behaviour towards the guest team
  • receive an EHF Security Delegate for the next two EHF competition home matches

Right to appeal

In line with the EHF Arbitration Regulations, a statement of claim may be filed with the EHF Court of Arbitration within 21 days.
