Third straight European Cup for VfL Gummersbach

2010/11 Men’s Cup Winners' Cup – Final, second leg:

VfL Gummersbach (GER) vs. Tremblay en France (FRA) 26:26 (10:15)
First leg result: 30:28

In the year of their 150th club anniversary German team VfL Gummersbach have won their third straight European Cup: After winning the EHF Cup in 2009 and the Cup Winners’ Cup title in 2010 they defended the Cup Winners’ Cup again. But for 50 minutes Tremblay en France were the clear dominant team. The Frenchmen, which had lost the first leg at home 28:30had equalized this deficit very early and led well-deserved with a five goal margin at the break (10:15).

Even the 11,000 spectators in the LANXESS Arena in Cologne, where the VELUX EHF FINAL4 will be played on the next weekend, were not able to push their team to turn the match until minute 48. In the meantime Tremblay started celebrating on the bench as their lead was intermediately eight goals.

But after the 23:16 the French team lost their heads and couldn’t control their emotions. When Arnaud Bingo received a red card after a foul committed against Drago Vukovic everything changed. As the hall went crazy, Gummersbach scored a 7:0 series to equalize at 23:23 in minute 56 and took the lead for the first time at 25:24 two minutes before the end – the match had been decided, even as Tremblay could equalize again. Too less to take the trophy, which was handed over by EHF treasurer Ralph Dejaco to the VfL Gummersbach.
