The European Handball Federation's flagship men's national team event will now be played over two extra days in January 2012.
EHF EURO 2012 extended by two days
The playing period of the Men’s EHF European Championship, which will take place in Serbia in January 2012 has been extended.
Following approval at the Executive Committee meeting on Friday 8 April and Saturday 9 April 2011, the EHF’s flagship national team event will now be played over two additional days.
The event will now open on Sunday, with two groups played Sunday and two on Monday, and there will be an additional rest day for all teams on the Saturday of the final weekend.
The semi-finals of the EHF EURO will be played on Friday and the final and bronze medal matches on Sunday.
The change will mean the opening of the EHF EURO at the weekend, aimed at generating more interest from the general public as well as TV and media. The addition of extra two days also allows for the additional rest day on the final Saturday, meaning less physical burden on players and an improvement in performance during the final matches.
Future EHF European Championships are also planned to take place using the new extended format. Discussions will now take place with the organisers of the EHF EURO events already allocated.
The new dates for the Men’s EHF EURO 2012 in Serbia are:
Men’s EHF EURO 2012 in Serbia – Sunday 15 January 2012 to Sunday 29 January 2012.
