Viborg defend national title

Exactly a week after having defended their EHF Champions League trophy successfully, Viborg HK also defended the Danish women’s championship with success. A 27-25 away win in the second final against EHF Cup winners Randers HK was enough for Viborg to take the title for the third year in succession – and for the 13th time in history. This makes Viborg the most successful club in the Danish league ever.

Viborg had won the first final at home 36-31, but as the goal difference has no significance in the Danish finals – only points count – a simple one goal win for Randers in the second match would be enough for them to get a third an decisive match.

And actually, Randers were on the way to getting a third match for a long time, as they were leading for the first 45 minutes of the second match – at times even by six goals – but an impressive finish by the experienced Viborg team meant that the EHF Champions League winners managed to turn the game and win by 27-25 at the end.

Increased pace deciding

"During the first half, some of the players looked as if they thought that things would go by themselves. We got that attitude changed at half time, and in the second half did we manage to get the usual pace into our play. This meant that we started to score more goals, and Randers could simply not follow us at the end," Viborg coach Jakob Vestergaard said after the title had been secured.

Left winger Henriette Mikkelsen summed things up in a slightly more simple way: "It was a tough match, but the most important fact is, which teams is leading after 60 minutes," the former Danish international said.

Viborg are again directly qualified for the EHF Champions League Group Phase next season, while Randers will have to go to through the qualification tournament in their first EHF Champions League campaign ever.
