Men’s EHF EURO 2012 – Qualification draw on 12 April

The EHF EURO 2012 Qualification Draw will take place in the City Hall of Belgrade, Serbia, on 12 April 2010. The draw event at 11:00hrs will be followed by a joint press conference of the EHF and the Serbian Handball Federation.

EHF EURO 2012: the qualification system

A total of 39 nations have registered for the Men’s EHF EURO 2012 in Serbia. France as the defending champion as well as Serbia as organiser are qualified directly for the final tournament. As the Final Tournament will be played with 16 teams, 14 places are open.

The remaining 37 teams will have to fight their way to Serbia via the qualification process, which consists of two phases.

Phase 1 was drawn at the final weekend of the EHF EURO 2010 in Austria; a total of 12 teams will play in 3 groups. These matches will take place in June 2010 and the winner of each group will proceed to the Qualification.

The Qualification for the EHF EURO 2012 in Serbia will be carried out in 7 groups of 4 teams each. The teams will play a total of 6 matches with a home and an away match against each of the other teams in their group. The teams ranked 1st and 2nd of each group will qualify for the EHF EURO 2012 in Serbia.

The playing dates for the qualification matches are as follows:

Round 1    Wednesday or Thursday, 27/28 October 2010
Round 2  Saturday or Sunday, 30/31 October 2010
Round 3  Wednesday or Thursday, 09/10 March 2011
Round 4  Saturday or Sunday, 12/13 March 2011
Round 5  Wednesday or Thursday, 08/09 June 2011
Round 6  Saturday or Sunday, 11/12 June 2011

Draw based on the EHF Men’s National Team Ranking

All European Men’s National Teams are ranked according to their performance at the past three top events (EHF EURO 2008 in Norway, World Championship 2009 in Croatia and EHF EURO 2010 in Austria).

Please click here for the EHF Men’s National Team Ranking where you can find the points and ranks of each individual team as well as the distribution of the pots for the draw.

The teams in red colour are already qualified for the final tournament in Serbia.
The teams in white colour are fixed participants for the Qualification Draw on 12 April 2010 in Belgrade
The teams in yellow will play the matches of Qualification Phase 1 in June 2010.
The teams in grey colour have not registered and will not participate.
The teams in green colour will go either in pot 3 or pot 4.

The draw on 12 April in Belgrade will see 4 pots with 7 teams each and the teams will be drawn to the 7 groups without any restriction whatsoever. The teams from pot 1 will be drawn to position 1 in each group, the teams from pot 2 to position 2 in each group with the same procedure for pot 3 and pot 4. There will be 3 “winner of qualification phase 1” in pot 4, as these matches will only be played in June.

The two teams of NED and POR (green colour) are both on position 23 with the exact same number of points and equal positions in all three past competitions. An intermediate step will therefore be necessary at the draw event in Belgrade in order to draw one of the two teams to pot 3 and the other team to pot 4.
