Decision on the Omer claim

In August 2009, the EHF Arbitration Tribunal made its final decision on a case related to a 2009 Men’s World Championship qualification play-off game between Romania and Montenegro. The EHF Arbitration Tribunal found that Mr. Palau Petre and Mr. Aihan Omer – respectively the vice-president of the Romanian Handball Federation and the head coach of the Romanian national team at the time – attempted to manipulate EHF referees and therefore excluded them from international handball competitions and EHF functions for five years.

Following the decision, Mr. Aihan Omer filed a claim at the EHF Court of Arbitration (ECA). The ECA has dealt with the case and announced its final decision as follows:

The claim of Mr. Aihan Omer is rejected and the decision made by the EHF Arbitration Tribunal is upheld.

Mr. Omer shall be suspended from all international handball competitions and from any EHF functions and activities for a period of 5 years as from the date of the EHF Arbitration Tribunal decision (6 August 2009).

The decision of the ECA shall be final and binding for all parties involved.
