The Montenegrin star wants to end her career at her current club.
Popovic stays in Viborg
Bojana Popovic, named as the world´s best handballer by many, has extended her contract with Champions League winner and Danish champion Viborg HK. The new agreement is valid until summer 2012.
The versatile Montenegrin backcourt player has recently returned to top handball after an injury that took more than eight months to heal. The player expects to end her career in Viborg in two and half years.
While Popovic had a contract valid until the end of this season, the media speculated whether she would join FCK Håndbold and play with Anja Andersen again who was her coach in Slagelse. They won CL three times together. However, Popovic decided to stay two more years with Viborg.
“Of course I had other options, but I believe Viborg is the right place for me as player and otherwise too. This is the most important for me. I like the town and I get along with the rest of the team well. I think it was the right decision to stay two more years here,” Popovic said.
Advance thinking
“Originally I was planning to end my career when at the age of 30 so that I can have a child then. Recently, I changed my priorities a bit. This long injury made me hungry for handball. I decided that I will not allow my knee to decide when I should end my career. However, when this contract will expire I will be 32. At that point it will be time for other things,” the 29-year old Popovic added.
Regarding her new contract, she admitted to agree wage a cut, but she did not specify it.
Viborg head coach, Jakob Vestergaard, is understandably satisfied.
“No doubt that all top clubs of Europe wanted to get her signature, so obviously it is great that we have the world´s best player in our squad for another two years,” Vestergaard said.
